For a long time, Chinese contemporary photography has been understood in international contexts through a set of recurring keywords: social transformation, urbanization, historical memory, identity, and reality. These experiences certainly constitute an important part of Chinese photography.
But today, as more and more Chinese artists' practices enter the international art scene, we are beginning to recognize a more pressing question: What, exactly, can contemporary Chinese image-making contribute to international photography today?
This September, Art On Space will bring a group of artists from China and beyond to Tokyo Gendai 2026. We do not intend to simply introduce "Chinese photography" to Japan—a country that has never needed to be taught how to look at photography.
From photobooks and street photography to conceptual practices, Japan has cultivated a globally influential photographic culture and viewing tradition. When image-based art rooted in Chinese social experience enters such a mature context, will it be heard as a new voice, or merely as another supplement to existing traditions? Or will it compel us to reconsider: does photography record reality, or is it actively participating in the construction of reality?
"HOW IMAGE CONSTRUCTS REALITY" — this has always been the core question for Art On Space. We start from photography, but go far beyond it. What we care about is how images enter reality, and in doing so, shape and transform our understanding of what is real.

过去很长一段时间，中国当代摄影在国际语境中，常常通过一些已经被反复讨论的关键词被理解：社会转型、城市化、历史记忆、身份与现实。
这些经验当然构成了中国摄影重要的一部分。
但今天，当越来越多中国艺术家的实践进入国际艺术现场，我们开始意识到，一个更值得被讨论的问题正在出现：
中国当代影像，究竟还能为今天的国际摄影带来什么？
今年九月，安空间将带着几位来自中国及国际语境的艺术家来到日本，参加 Tokyo Gendai 2026。
这一次，我们并不想简单地把“中国摄影”介绍给日本。因为日本从来不是一个需要被重新教育如何观看摄影的地方。
从摄影书、街头摄影到观念摄影，日本已经形成了世界范围内极具影响力的摄影文化与观看传统。当来自中国社会经验的图像艺术进入这样一个成熟的摄影语境，它会被理解为一种新的声音，还是成为已有摄影传统中的另一种补充？
或者，它会迫使我们重新思考：摄影究竟在记录现实，还是正在参与现实的生成？

这也是安空间一直以来真正关注的问题。
我们从摄影出发，却不止于摄影本身。
安空间所关注的，是图像如何进入现实，并在其中建构、改变我们对现实的理解。
